		<description>For 2 months, I visited the many services profided by the East End Cooperative Ministry and photographed the residents. This included a men's homeless shelter, halfway house, soup kitchen, and homes of 'Meals on Wheel' recipients. There are a few images from my time.

Connecting patients, sharing stories.
Storytelling has always been an integral part of my design process. Crafting strong visual narratives can effectively deliver information in a clear and compelling way. How can design be used to tell the stories of people with a mysterious disease? How can a platform that encourages connections empower users to learn more and share more? These are all questions I asked when I began work on my senior design project at Carnegie Mellon University.

My Lupus Story.
My sister, Laura, was diagnosed with Lupus when she was only 7. Needless to say, this disease has had a tremendous effect on her and our family. But 18 years later, she is pursuing a Masters in Social Work from the University of Washington and living life to the fullest. This project is inspired by her perseverance.

Lupus is a chronic, inflammatory disease in which the body's immune system fails to serve its normal protective functions and instead forms antibodies that attack healthy tissues and organs. For most people, lupus is a mild disease affecting only a few organs. For others, it may cause serious and even life-threatening problems. It is estimated that 1.4 to 2 million Americans have been diagnosed with lupus, making it more common than leukemia, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and cystic fibrosis - combined. Lupus can occur at any age and in either sex, although it appears 10x more frequently in women than in men.

Where do I start?
There were several elements to consider when beginning this project. Rebranding the institution was one goal. But establishing an audience and need was another. What was it that lupus patients wanted in a campaign? How can they empower each other?

The existing site had many unorganized URLS and no clear hierarchy of information. Another important part of the project was talking and interviewing actual patients and their family members. Going to the 2011 Lupus Walk was a first step in this.

Iterations
Several rounds of visual iterations, studies in grids and typography, and interaction were explored. This site was a companion site to the main site so it had to retain the visual language of the homepage while having a distinct voice.

A brand story.
Crafting the logo was an important component of this project. The butterfly has become an unofficial symbol for lupus. I attempted to integrate this into the logo but realized that there could be a stronger representation of what the organization does – connecting people.

The butterfly and sans-serif (set in Whitney HTF) seemed impersonal. It looked more appropriate for a start-up, not an organization that helps patients. That lead me to experiment in creating a custom ligature that joined to create "us".

Website

The website simplified more than 30 separate URLs into 10 main pages with a focus on finding location based services. Accessibility was key in the redesign.

The campaign is built around the idea that a conversation about lupus can be hugely beneficial for not only patients but people who know little about the disease. The content is generated patients, family, and friends. "Let's Talk Lupus" is about sharing stories and experience to empower other patients. Users can submit videos, photos, and stories to a public facing website. The stories in itself are the campaign.

LetsTalksLupus.com 
The website was particularly challenging to build for a few reasons. This was the first time I had build a website with a CMS. With the help of super developer Spencer Williams, we worked through many logistical problems. Aesthetically, I wanted the site to look like an evolution of the main foundation site but with a slight editorial twist. I intentionally made all the content available in a single scroll page to allow for access to as many different stories as possible. 




The Videos. 
Interviewing and meeting with patients was a crucial part in ensuring my messaging was authentic. In additional, it was a playful way to dip my toes into creating videos and how they fit into a larger system.

Print 
Many of the Lupus Foundation's existing audience received their information through traditional print media like newsletters. I saw this as another opportunity to align visual content with the redesign of the web. </description>
